Fixed Voltage Regulators ICs with accurate Datasheets

Hello Engineers, we need to get desired or fixed voltage supply many times in many applications while designing some applications or circuits. For this, we need to use voltage regulators. So in this post, I am going to tell you in detail about the basic types of fixed voltage regulators and their classifications on the basis of their properties. So leat’s get started with our topic ” Positive Fixed voltage regulators” and types of fixed voltage regulators with respect to their output properties. Already there are some awesome sites online like the alldatasheet.com. But, here in this post I am focussing and summarising a brief datasheet about all fixed voltage regulators ICs. Also, a small PDF book at the end of this post for DATASHEETS.

What is a voltage regulator?

  • A voltage regulator is a circuitry/devices or Integrated Circuit components that provide us DC to DC constant stabilized and regulated voltage output with the independence of how power is to be drawn through it.
  • Voltage regulators may be used in a wide variety of applications with or without support active or passive components. But some of the most common applications are:-
  1. Computer SMPS power supplies in which first the AC inputs are rectified then stabilized and regulated by the voltage regulation circuitries and ICs.
  2. DC adapters and mobile phone chargers all are applications where we need a regulated power supply with respect to voltage as well as current.
  3. The automotive industry, The battery charger in vehicles as well as other components that work via a regulated output like AC system, phone charging, Power coming from alternator also needed to regulated, etc.

So let’s discuss basic voltage regulator with respect to output properties with circuit diagram.

Classification of the fixed voltage regulator ICs

Fixed Voltage regulators:

  • Fixed voltage regulators are those circuits or Integrated Circuits(ICs) that are used to get desired fixed voltage output with a constant current and fixed output voltage supply.
  • The Fixed voltage regulators can be of Positive voltage regulator types or negative voltage regulator types.
  • These are more widely used as in most electronic devices like DC adapters, SMPSs, TV SMPS, Mobile phone chargers, etc we need only fixed voltage outputs.
  • I am going to discuss some kinds of fixed voltage regulator 3 pin transistor ICs.All those ICs come in LM78XX/MC78XX series.
  • All having internal current limiting, thermal shut down and safe operating area protection, making them essentially indestructible. Usually, they are rated up to 1A but practically the can give current output up to 1.2A or even 1.5A with proper heat management like using proper heat sinking elements.

1. LM7805 VOLTAGE REGULATOR

The LM7805 voltage regulator is a type of 3 pins positive voltage regulator IC that has TO-220 packaging with a fixed 5v voltage output that is required in a lot of applications. It has inbuilt internal current limiting, thermal shut down and inbuilt safe operation protection, making it essentially indestructible. Usually, they are rated up to 1A so theoretically its 5w but can go some 100 to 300 ma above the rated value with proper heatsinking.

2.LM7806/LM7806I VOLTAGE REGULATOR and its DATASHEET

It’s also a 3-terminal positive voltage regulator with TO-220 Package having 6v standard voltage output with peak current output of 1.8A with proper heat sinking. Its maximum output power is up to 15w max.

3.LM7808 Fixed VOLTAGE REGULATOR and datasheet

LM7808 is a Fixed voltage regulator which provides 8v regulated output voltage. Similar to others, it also has TO-220 Packaging .and a rated current of 1A but can go up to 1.2-1.5A. It has internal thermal overload thermal protection.

4.LM7809 VOLTAGE REGULATOR AND DATASHEET

The LM7809/MC7809 voltage regulator is a type of 3 pins positive voltage regulator IC that has TO-220 packaging with a fixed 5v voltage output that is required in a lot of applications. It has inbuilt internal current limiting, thermal shut down and inbuilt safe operation protection, making it essentially indestructible. Usually, they are rated up to 2.2 A peak current so it’s approx. up to 18w max.

7.LM7818 VOLTAGE REGULATOR

This is a 3 terminal positive voltage regulator that gives 18v output, its max.output current is rated at 2.1A. It also has internal thermal overload protection, internal short circuit current limiting.

Negative Voltage Regulators

  • They are also a type of 3-pin voltage regulator which comes in negative voltage regulators category that provides us negative voltage outputs. Series for negative voltage regulators starts from 79xx and alike Postive regulator series they also come in TO-220 packaging.
  • They are required in circuits where we need positive input VCC as well as negative VCC input to drive various logic ICs.
  • Some common kinds of available are LM 7905, LM7909, LM7912.
